Balhousie Stormont - Star Baker

Balhousie has a celebrity baker in-house these days, so much so, she’s referred to as the Mary Berry of Stormont. And making preserves is just, Star Baker, Elizabeth Cannon’s jam! But less jam and Jerusalem; more jam, scones…. and snowballs!

Activities Coordinator at Balhousie Stormont in Blairgowrie, Ashleigh Henvey told told us, “I came across Elizabeth’s jam making when her son brought in jam for Elizabeth to give to her friends and he mentioned how his mum always loved making jam for her visitors and missed it dearly, so I asked Elizabeth if this is something she would like to do. Elizabeth really enjoys this time: it’s been a real touchpoint to help her become comfortable and involved in her home, and sharing about herself so that we can get to know her better too. It’s so rewarding to see her at her happiest when she’s baking.”

Elizabeth followed up her jamming sessions and got busy showing her fellow residents and staff how to make scones… well they were essential to go with homemade jam and cream for afternoon treats! And it may be a mild November, but it’s snowing at Stormont, with Elizabeth making snowballs from her own recipes. Elizabeth shared that she’d actually written two cook books and got them published to raise money for the hospice.

And the good news!? Elizabeth’s jam, is not only providing the just desserts at Balhousie Stormont, but they’ll be selling Elizabeth’s sweet treats at a special Christmas gathering in the grounds of the Blairgowrie care home at Christmastime. There will be groups of carol singers performing including the Blairgowrie Lyric Choir and there’ll even be a video link from the Blairgowrie brownies. As well as well as selling their prized jam, there’ll be raffle tickets on sale for their wonderful hampers – all proceeds to the care home’s comfort fund.

With Great British Bake off down to it’s final three now, we think they should be sent across to Elizabeth for judging.

As the saying goes, ‘Happiness is like Jam. You can’t spread even a little without getting some on yourself.’

Psst… One of their Christmas hampers is ready to raffle… £1 a strip so if you would like a raffle ticket or anymore information, feel free to contact the home, on 01250 872853
