As part of this year’s BCG In Bloom, where we award the horticultural efforts of our teams and residents, we’re giving you a closer look at some of the entries.

The competition has five chances to win and there will be prizes for each of the following categories: Best Overall Garden; Most Innovative Use of Space; Outstanding Resident Gardener; Best Pot; and Most Improved Garden. Our Chief Executive and Managing Director will judge the final winner from photos and videos compiled by the entrants.

At Alastrean, our care home in Aberdeenshire, the residents have been busy bringing colour to the garden this summer. One keen gardener in particular, Jim Buchan, has produced some fantastic results.

Jim has a big passion for gardening. Back when he lived at home he grew begonias, tomatoes and strawberries. He chose to grow begonias at Alastrean as, to him, they are the most work to keep maintaining. He waters and deadheads them to keep blooming throughout the summer season and before the winter he will pull out the tubers, cut back the stems and wrap them before the frost ready to plant for the following year.

Since coming to Alastrean Jim has ventured out to grow other vegetables, such as cucumbers, courgettes, carrots and even pumpkins this year!
