Residents at Balhousie Moyness Care Home in Dundee are discovering the ‘life-changing’ benefits of regular exercise, through an accessible and inclusive health and wellbeing programme.

The weekly sessions, which include boxing and chair yoga, are led by Lynn Warren, founder of Better:Gen, a Dundee organisation which offers an exciting new concept in fitness and health promotion.

Better:Gen helps support adults who would not ordinarily access health and wellness activities, to lead a healthier lifestyle. The benefits of health and exercise for all ages is well documented, however for older adults, the impact can be truly life-changing.

Vicky Byers, Activity Co-ordinator for Balhousie Moyness Care Home, has been delighted with the enthusiastic response to the sessions from the residents.

“They absolutely love it. The same group of about a dozen residents come together every week and have been really motivated by Lynn’s energy and encouragement. The classes are fun, and there’s a social element to the exercises as well. Alister, the only man in our group, has really enjoyed the attention and the chance to chat with the ladies! Amy, another regular attendee, had a stroke before she came to stay with us and this had reduced her mobility. Taking part in the exercises every week has enabled her to regain movement in her arms.”

With a key focus on enjoyment and participation, trained staff deliver 30-40-minute wellness sessions to improve strength, balance and flexibility, complete with background music to motivate the group. The sessions compliment Balhousie’s approach to ‘person-centred’ care, and participants are encouraged to take part in as much or as little of the session as they feel able to.
