Resident enjoying cheese and crackers

Last week, residents at Balhousie Huntly, in Aberdeenshire, didn’t feel Bleu or throw a Feta, Brie’cause as National Cheese Lover’s Day, it was definitely a Gouda day!

Legend tells us someone created the first cheese by chance, indeed the earliest record of cheese making dates back to 5,500 BC! Today there are over 1,400 varieties of cheese. But the fact is, simple as it may be to make – sour milk; separate curds from the whey; curds salted and left to mature – cheese plays a big part in our mealtimes and is a firm favourite of most of us.

Branston Pickle’s study crowned Cheddar as the UK’s favourite cheese amongst the top 10:

  1. Cheddar
  2. Red Leicester
  3. Brie
  4. Mozzarella
  5. Parmesan
  6. Stilton
  7. Cream Cheese
  8. Wensleydale
  9. Camembert
  10. Feta

What’s your favourite?

Residents at Huntly, say they need many… many more tasting sessions before they decide their preferred flavours. But that’s fine. The National Day Calendar has many more days full of cheesy celebrations.

  • Cream Cheese Brownie day (February 10)
  • Cheese Doodle day (March 5)
  • Toasted Cheese Sandwich day (April 12)
  • Cheese Souffle day (May 18)
  • Simple Cheese Day (June 4)
  • Cheesecake day (July 30)
  • String Cheese day(September 20)
  • Mouldy Cheese day(October 9)

Our cheese-lovers can taste their way through the year!
