cildren and residents playing games

Summertime is the time for sports days and medal presentations. And Balhousie Moyness in Broughty Ferry, Dundee is no different.

There was a fantastic turnout with residents and families taking part, and competitors of all ages, thanks to the wonderful children from Tots Academy and the eldest member of the Moyness Olympians, Ann, at 103! It was a memorable afternoon seeing so many people together for the first time since the Pandemic began, with residents finally being able to enjoy time not only with their own family and friends, but with the children too.

Moyness Activities Coordinator Bert suggested the excellent idea to name the four competing teams on Dundee’s DC Thomson comic legends, with which all residents are familiar and able to reminisce over, The Beano, The Dandy, The Beezer and The Topper

But serious Olympic-style games do not get underway without some serious training regimes. Bert held training sessions on a daily basis, preparing and familiarising our teams with the games, and our residents did not fail to impress.

Families and friends all joined in the fun, and everyone involved got seriously competitive. As did the little athletes from Tots Academy, whom the residents and staff got to know after they joined the Dundee care home for an intergenerational show by the Buff and Sheen performance duo at the beginning of May.

And the all-important Tournament Results?

  1. The Toppers;
  2. The Beanos;
  3. The Dandies
  4. The Beezers

A presentation followed, where the winning team were awarded individual trophies; 2nd place received gold medals; 3rd place, silver medals and 4th places received bronze medals. Everyone was a winner!

Buffet and celebrations continued throughout the afternoon until tired competitors retired to rest.

And the Tots Academy children further delighted Moyness staff and residents with a gorgeous platter of fresh fruit to say ‘thank you’ from Full of Zing in Dundee.

Staff at Moyness aim to continue this tournment annually, and especially the fun and games with their tiny teamies from the nursery
