To mark Alzheimer Scotland’s Dementia Awareness Week, the team at Balhousie Monkbarns decided to do something a little bit different. This year is the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath, so the home have decided to create a poem about their home town featuring precious memories from the residents and staff.

Led by Activities Co-ordinator Kirsty Taylor, each of Monkbarns’ four lounges will create their own poem sharing their stories of their ‘braw wee toon’ and the people who live there. The first poem is from the Fraser lounge with the other three lounge’s poems to follow soon.

This poem talks of ‘oor smokies’, steep cliff faces, the Queen’s visit and a stolen boat called ‘Oor Girl Jean’. We can’t wait to read more stories of Arbroath recalled by Monkbarns’ residents. Read the full poem below.
