Turning 100 is a momentous occasion – and Balhousie Willowbank resident May Angus celebrated that precise milestone in style.

May was joined by family and friends, as well as residents and staff at the Carnoustie home, for a tea party to mark her big day.

Brian Boyd, Lord Provost of Angus, delivered a card from King Charles, and everyone enjoyed peach schnapps and lemonade – May’s favourite drink.

Staff also helped May and her family hold a private party in one of Willowbank’s dining rooms, while she enjoyed an extra special drink some of her fellow centenarians.

Mandy Grant, Activities Coordinator at Balhousie Willowbank, said: “May had a fantastic day filled with family and friends visiting, with some travelling from as far as London to be there for her special day.

“She received so many cards and flowers – her room looks and smells like a florist’s!

“We are so glad to have been able to celebrate with her and her loved ones on her very special birthday.”

Born in Glasgow in 1923, May joined the army and served in the Royal Engineers as a cook in Greenock, where she met her husband Charlie.

The couple had twins Hazel and Heather before moving to Dundee, and May and her daughters were often waved to by the Queen Mother on her way to Lord Roberts Workshop.

May and Charlie were lifelong members of the church. She served as a Sunday School teacher, while he was a captain in the Boys’ Brigade.

Away from church she worked at Draffens, before a 25-year career at M&S where, even as she turns 100, she still receives a 20% discount on everything she buys.

She also enjoys floral art and watching ice hockey, as well as spending time with her eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Happy birthday, May!
