Residents at Wheatlands enjoyed a visit from Bunny & Co petting zoo.

Residents at Balhousie Wheatlands had a welcome visit from some furry and feathery friends.

Laura and Stan from Glasgow-based petting zoo Bunny & Co visited the Bonnybridge home to spend time with the residents, who got to meet a number of different animals.

The visiting party consisted of two ducks, a mouse, a large hen named Betty Davis, three rabbits and no fewer than six guinea pigs, and all proved a hit at Wheatlands, with the residents able to cuddle and stroke them.

Multiple studies have found that being around animals can improve moods and reduce the risk of developing depression, decreasing feelings of anxiety.

Interacting with them can trigger the release of endorphins, a neurotransmitter which gives a calming effect and boosts the level of serotonin – a chemical linked with happiness and wellbeing.

Anna, one of the residents, got on so well with a guinea pig that it fell asleep in her lap while Robert developed a particular affinity with the mouse.

The visit was such a success that the animals will return in a matter of weeks.

Suzanne Williams, Activities Co-ordinator at Balhousie Wheatlands, said: “The animals appeared to bring a lot of happiness and calmness with them and gave the residents something to focus on and show love and affection to.

“Bunny & Co are booked in to visit us again in April and we can’t wait!”
