There may still be restrictions on gigs and other performances, but for one care facility in Perthshire the fun of live music continues even a year after lockdown.

Service users at ASC, where adults with disabilities and challenging behaviours seek to live as independent a life as possible, took to their car park for a sing- and dance-a-long this week, thanks to a visit from local musician Chris White.

Crieff-based Chris has been a regular live entertainer at ASC and other homes in the Balhousie Care Group for several years. When visiting restrictions were put in place last March, the homes continued to invite Chris to perform – although outside only.

On Tuesday, ASC service users and staff joined in Chris’s medley of favourites, from Abba’s Mamma Mia to Neil Sedaka and Tony Christie’s Is This The Way to Amarillo.

“It’s always a pleasure to perform at ASC, they’re such a lovely group to sing with and interact really well,” said Chris, who has been performing for care homes for four years. “Since the pandemic I’ve been performing primarily for care homes since there have been no pubs [open] at all.”

Jen Aitchison, Manager at ASC, said: “Music lifts everyone’s spirits but our service users in particular love it. It’s a great chance for people from all of the units at our Balbeggie site – staff and service users – to get together. Huge thanks to Chris for making everyone’s day.”

About Balhousie Care Group

Balhousie Care Group was formed 29 years ago to fill a gap in quality residential care in North East Scotland. Today, with 26 homes in the area, it is one of the leading providers of care for the elderly in Scotland, providing care to over 900 residents.

Balhousie Care prides itself on its person-centred approach to care. Putting people right at the forefront of everything they do; it’s inclusive of everyone. They capture this philosophy through the roll out of ‘Together We’re Great’, an initiative which recognises the skills, talents, attributes and support areas for each and every person involved in the organisation. Together We’re Great aims to value individuality and promote excellence across the organisation.

A Participation Charter – a first-of-its-kind in the care home sector – commits to residents getting a bigger say than ever in the care they receive, from writing care home policies to recruiting staff.

Balhousie Care Group is the recipient of numerous awards. These include three Scottish Care Awards, 2019 Growth Business and 2018 Service Business of the Year at The Courier Business Awards, 2019 Growth Business of the Year Perthshire Chamber of Commerce STAR Award, and SME Scotland Business Man of the Year 2019 for Chairman Tony Banks.
