We could have filled our TV ad a hundred times over with amazing staff and residents from across our homes. Here we get to know more about Steven Smith, a Senior Carer at Balhousie Brookfield, Carnoustie.

Even before entering the world of care, Steven has always enjoyed helping others – as well as some Netflix and a beer.

Having always likes being around people and socialising, working in the care sector was the perfect fit for Steven. He’s also a qualified first aider where he’s enjoyed attended lots of functions and football matches as a first aider.

His favourite things about working in care is how the residents and staff are like your family.

“We treat everyone like our brothers, our sisters, our grannies, our aunts, our uncles,” says Steven.

He believes that, to work in care, you need to be loving, caring and have a good sense of humour which is something that Steven certainly has. “We always get pulled up for a dance on the floor from the residents. You don’t get a chance to walk past when there’s music on. They’ll want you to sing along!”

His advice for anyone considering a career in care is simple. “Be willing to work as a team and enjoy what you do, you will get so much out of this job as it’s very rewarding.”

Steven is even known to come in to the home on his day off with fellow carer, Jen where the pick a resident to take them out somewhere. “We’ll take them out, buy them lunch and just socialise. Everyone’s like family here.”
