Balhousie Residents visit Pitlochry Festival Theatre to see Sunshine on Leith.

As winter kicks in and the weather gets bleaker, a group of our residents have found some sunshine in Highland Perthshire – all thanks to the kindness of a local theatre.

Residents were invited by Pitlochry Festival Theatre to have a sneak preview of their latest show, Sunshine On Leith at the dress rehearsal.

Over 40 staff and residents from four of our care homes, including nearby Pitlochry, Stormont Lodge in Blairgowrie, North Inch in Perth and ASC, our specialist care facility in Balbeggie, made the trip and were given a warm welcome by the theatre.

And, of course, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the performance!

An audience favourite, Sunshine on Leith is running from November 17 – December 23 and features songs from iconic Scottish band, The Proclaimers. Written by Stephen Greenhorn and directed by Elizabeth Newman, the show is a funny and moving play about two pals, Dave and Ally who return to their beloved Edinburgh after going to war. A perfect sunshine tonic for our residents from Balhousie Care.

The invitation marks the latest in a long-standing friendship between the Balhousie Care and Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Last year, the theatre ran workshop sessions with some of our staff members who run activities with the residents, to help with building performance orientated activities with residents. The theatre also often visits homes to perform, particularly during the festive season.

Karen Johnson, Interim Managing Director at Balhousie Care Group, said:

“It is absolutely fantastic to see so many of our residents enjoying a trip to the theatre, all thanks to our friends at Pitlochry Festival Theatre. I wish I could have gone along too! Community partnerships, like the one we have with Pitlochry Festival Theatre, enable our residents to have some very special experiences and, for that, we are very grateful.”

Deborah Dickinson, Producer from Pitlochry Festival Theatre, said:

“We were delighted to welcome residents and staff from the Balhousie Care Group to the Theatre to see the dress rehearsal of Sunshine on Leith.  It was lovely to see everyone smiling and enjoying the show.”
