Pupils from an Angus primary school proved just how strong a bond they have with the residents of Balhousie Monkbarns by dropping in for a visit during their summer holiday.

For several months, the youngsters from Timmergreens Primary in Arbroath have regularly stopped by at Monkbarns.

They’ve played games like Jenga, chatted to the residents, building beautiful friendships spanning the generations.

Some of the pupils read to the residents, who return the favour by teaching the kids skills, such as chess.

Although they visit every second Friday during term time, some of the class missed their trips so much they decided to pay a visit during the holidays.

Angela Crosby, Activities Coordinator at Balhousie Monkbarns, said: “We were so happy to see our friends from Timmergreens when they stopped by for a visit.

“The residents love it when their little friends come to see them, and it was a wonderful surprise for them.

“We’re so grateful to the children for taking time out of their holidays to put a smile on the residents’ faces.”

Numerous studies have shown that having children around care homes helps boost residents’ confidence, increases communication and improves memory.

Seniors also make great listeners and are able to give children their full attention, which is not always possible in the classroom. They can pass on wisdom, while research shows children who regularly interact with older people have improved reading and social skills.
