Residents at Balhousie Wheatlands are taking part in a walking challenge for Dementia UK.

Residents at Balhousie Wheatlands are lacing up their walking shoes to do their bit for those living with dementia.

Led by Activities Coordinator, Suzanne Williams, occupants of the Bonnybridge facility are aiming to walk at least a kilometre every day in February in aid of Dementia UK.

Even though the weather has meant they have been unable to walk outside, the residents have enjoyed raising money by walking from one end of the home to the other, tracking their progress on Strava.

“We started the challenge last week and the residents have been keen to participate daily,” Suzanne said.

“They have appeared bright and motivated while participating, and it seems to have sparked conversation among everyone.”

As well as raising vital funds to support those living with dementia, daily exercise is proven to have a number of other benefits for older adults.

It lowers the risk of heart disease, strokes, colon cancer and diabetes, and keeps their weight steady. It has also been shown to reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

Walking can also help reduce blood pressure.
