Care home Manager sat on a sofa by a window in front of a garden

We’re proud to see our Alastrean Home Manager featured in Care Home Professional, one of the top magazines in the sector, providing news, trends and market information for private care home companies in the UK, as Manager of the Month.

In her Q&A, Teresa has talked about her love for her role, for the stunning, scenic, Aberdeenshire Care Home she manages, as well as her career progression and success with Balhousie Care,

How did you join the home?

I came to Scotland in 2005 and began working as a Care Assistant and, after a few months, I was promoted to Senior Care Assistant. In 2006 I got my RGN PIN Number and have thoroughly enjoyed working as a Nurse since. Then, at the beginning this year I was offered the position of Interim Home Manager at Balhousie Alastrean. Since becoming the manager, I’ve been given wonderful support from the team Alastrean.

What is special about the home?

Alastrean is located in the most beautiful part of Scotland near the lovely town of Aboyne in Aberdeenshire. With landscaped gardens and spectacular views, Alastrean is the perfect setting for luxury living and a high quality of life .We are very passionate about making Alastrean a home-from-home for our residents. The home has a lovely, friendly atmosphere and lots of activities for residents to experience and enjoy, every day.

What do you find most rewarding about your current job?

Seeing our residents smiling and knowing that they are supported by an enthusiastic and caring team.

What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it.

I think I can adapt easily to change, but, since I took the post as a Home Manager at Alastrean, I found it difficult that I was spending less time with the residents, but I’ve found I make time every day for them and enjoy our catch ups.

Tell us the three things you need to provide great care?

I think that you have to:

  1. Love people
  2. Love what are you doing
  3. You need to have very good team, where every member is determined to deliver the best possible person-centred care, based on respect and dignity.

How do you relax?

Every moment of spare time I have I like to spend in the garden where I can really relax.
