Staff and residents at Balhousie Brookfield swapped their usual attire for ponchos and cowboy hats for their latest themed night – this time, focusing on the Wild West.

For one night only, the Carnoustie home was transformed into the plains of Texas as residents took part in games, tried cowboy food and got involved in some country dancing.

Dinner consisted of a traditional Western meal of bourbon and beef stew before a game of hoopla with an inflatable cactus.

The rootin’, tootin’ residents then recreated duels at dawn – and cook, Ray, was no match for resident, Jean, who was quick on the draw to win their showdown.

Moira MacDonald Sword, Activities Coordinator at Balhousie Brookfield, said: “All our staff and residents had a fantastic time at our Western-themed night. Everyone got right into the spirit by dressing up and taking part in the games and dancing.

“Activities like themed nights are great for helping our residents socialise, and it is wonderful to see them having such a good time.”

Parties, particularly with themes, have been shown to benefit older people. Seniors who take part tend to have improved cognitive skills.

Themes can also bring back happy memories and allow them to reminisce.
